This rhyme has many great things going for it:

  1. It’s curious and imaginative, so it keeps young ones engaged and attentive.
  2. It demonstrates one-to-one correspondence when teaching numbers.
  3. It’s tactile. The tickle at the end promotes closeness and bonding between the adult and child.

Let’s discuss point two. One-to-one correspondence happens when a value is added to the number. That means children understand the meaning behind the number and count one object at a time. The skill is a precursor to later numeracy skills like addition and subtraction and often goes untaught as children memorise numbers and it can go unnoticed that they haven’t yet grasped the value of each number.
